ARTIST STATEMENT

“NASTY NICE” examines the performance of politeness through the lens of Southern hospitality. After moving to the South, I became fascinated by the disconnect between outward kindness and underlying resentment. The sculpture draws on this experience, using familiar symbols of celebration and happiness to question the authenticity of social interactions.

Glossy balloons and a smiling face create an inviting, cheerful façade, while a heart-shaped balloon reading “I Hate You”is partially concealed behind the smiley face. The hidden message suggests that genuine feelings are often masked by friendliness, exposing the tension between appearance and reality. By pairing playful, nostalgic forms with emotional contradiction, “NASTY NICE” invites viewers to consider the subtle ways people perform kindness while concealing discomfort, judgment, or hostility beneath the surface.
